A Homeowner’s Guide to Maintaining Your Painted Cabinets

May 3, 2026

Your cabinets play a huge role in setting the tone of your kitchen or bathroom, and a fresh coat of paint can go a very long way. However, once they’ve been painted, the job isn’t entirely done; they must also be maintained! Proper maintenance is what separates cabinets that look great for a decade from ones that start showing wear within a year or two. With that in mind, these easy tips will help you protect your finish and get the most out of your investment for years to come.

Tip #1. Clean Them Gently & Often

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is using harsh cleaning products when it’s time to wipe down their cabinets. Abrasive sprays, bleach-based cleaners, and even scrubbing pads can all dull, scratch, or even strip a painted finish over time. Instead, stick to a soft microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. After cleaning, always follow up with a dry cloth to remove any leftover moisture. A quick wipe-down a few times a week takes only a minute or two and goes a long way toward keeping your finish looking sharp.

Tip #2. Be Mindful of Heat & Humidity

Steam from boiling pots, heat from ovens, and general humidity from sinks and showers can all break down paint over time. If your kitchen or bathroom doesn’t already have a good range hood or exhaust fan, using one consistently can make a real difference in how long your painted cabinet finish holds up. It’s also a good idea to avoid placing appliances that generate a lot of heat, like toasters, air fryers, or hair dryers, directly up against cabinet doors. A little awareness about where heat and moisture collect in your kitchen goes a long way toward protecting your cabinets.

Tip #3. Handle Your Cabinets with Care

The way you use your cabinets every day has a bigger impact on their longevity than most people realize. Repeatedly grabbing painted surfaces instead of the hardware, slamming doors, or letting drawers close with force can all lead to chips, scuffs, and worn edges over time. Get in the habit of using knobs, handles, or pulls every time and consider installing soft-close hinges if you don’t already have them to reduce stress on cabinet joints and edges.

Taking care of your painted cabinets doesn’t require a lot of time or effort; just a few consistent habits and a little know-how!
