A fresh coat of interior paint can dramatically change a space, especially when you’re working in bedrooms, guestrooms, or other similar small rooms. However, many homeowners and property owners wonder whether they should wait before using a newly-painted room for sleeping. The answer depends on several factors, including the type of paint used, the ventilation, and the drying time allowed. Here’s a closer look.
Paint Type Matters
Today’s paint manufacturers understand the dangers of certain paint components, and most modern paints are low-VOC, or zero-VOC, meaning they release fewer harmful odors and chemicals as they dry. These paints are generally safer and allow rooms to be used sooner than older products that contain high amounts of these volatile organic compounds.
Drying & Curing Time
Even still, low-VOC paints still need time to dry and cure properly; while water-based paints can dry within a few hours, oil-based ones need a full day or so. There’s an expression about watching paint dry, and the truth is, while you don’t have to watch your paint dry for every second—which is the epitome of boredom—you do need to check on it after at least 24 hours. This allows fumes to dissipate and reduces the risk of irritation, headaches, or lingering odors.
Ventilation Is Key
Open windows, run fans (ceiling and tower can be used), and use HVAC systems to help circulate fresh air and remove the paint fumes more quickly. Well-ventilated rooms are going to be safer to occupy sooner. You also want to keep other special considerations in mind, such as if the space is used by children or elderly individuals, as well as anyone with a sensitive respiratory system or allergies. In these cases, it may be best to wait at least 48 hours.
Professional painting services are always going to use high-quality, low-VOC products and ensure proper ventilation to make sure that all painted rooms are safe to occupy—just another reason to consider seeking help if you don’t want to do things yourself!
