4 Tips from Your Professional Painter on House Painting with Pets

October 2, 2017

Dog playing with cans of paintWe all love our four legged fur babies, but there are some activities that just aren’t pet friendly. Painting is one of those. However, it’s easy to paint your house and protect your pets. You’ll simply need to take a few extra precautions to keep the pets in your life safe and happy while you improve the look of your home. Keep reading to find out some house painting tips for pet owners from a professional painter and painting team.

1 – Pick the Right Paint

You’ll want to start by looking for paints that are nontoxic and pet friendly. You can ask your local hardware store paint counter for assistance finding the right paints. Today, the vast majority of home interior paints are very safe for your pets and your family, but it’s best to make sure you’re buying a paint that will not adversely affect the residents of your home.

2 – Keep Your Pets Safe

While you’re painting, you need to remove your pet from the area. If you have an inside/outside pet, this may be a great opportunity for a walk or visit to a dog park. If your pet only lives indoors, you may want to barricade them in a room where they will not be affected by the painting. If you’re planning to paint the entire house, you may want to consider boarding your pet or asking a friend to pet sit.

3 – Air Out the Space

Once you’ve applied the paint, use fans and turn up the air conditioning to dry the paint more quickly. If it’s a temperate day and there’s no rain in the forecast, opening doors and windows for an hour or so will also help with this process.

4 – Dry the Fresh Paint & Clean Up Thoroughly

Airing out the area will help to dry the paint, but make sure all surfaces are completely dry before reintroducing your pets. You should also carefully clean up any spills, remove drop cloths and painter’s tape, and carefully clean the floors as well as any furniture near the painted surfaces.
